Hybrid Repair and Service at our Sandy shop

McNeil's Auto Care in Sandy is EV and hybrid certified, and the shop holds the designation of number one NAPA shop worldwide. High voltage drivetrains are serviced here rather than referred to a dealership, by ASE certified technicians trained on the systems rather than guessing at them.

A hybrid is two drivetrains in one vehicle, and the interesting faults are usually where they meet. Regenerative braking means pads and rotors often outlast the interval a combustion car would need, so they are inspected on real wear. The engine side still wants its oil, filters and coolant on a conventional schedule.

Sandy runs its own safety and emissions testing lane and handles DMV renewal on site, which is worth knowing with a hybrid. A hybrid is not exempt from emissions testing the way a fully electric vehicle is, so the test, any repair needed to pass it, the retest and the registration can all happen in one visit here.

A Valvoline Express Care quick lube lane runs alongside the main service bays, so the routine half of hybrid ownership does not have to occupy a diagnostic bay. Anything that needs high voltage work, a scan tool or a proper diagnosis moves across into the main shop.

Hybrid ownership also changes the routine rather than removing it. Tires and suspension wear normally, brake fluid and the battery cooling loops still need attention, and because the engine runs less of the time, its oil ages on a different curve rather than not at all. We service the vehicle on what it is actually doing rather than a generic mileage interval.

We will tell you when something does not need replacing. A battery pack reading within tolerance stays where it is, and nothing is authorized until you have approved the work and the price. The Sandy shop is an AAA Approved Auto Repair facility rated 4.6 from 1,161 customer reviews, open Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

Hybrid Repair and Service in Sandy, answered

Does a hybrid still have a twelve volt battery?
It does, and it is the thing that catches owners out most often. That small auxiliary battery wakes the vehicle and runs the computers, and as it weakens a hybrid can throw up a screen full of alarming warnings that have nothing whatever to do with the high voltage pack. It gets tested first.
Is there anything a hybrid should never have done to it?
Jump starting and towing both have rules that vary by model, and getting either wrong is expensive. A number of hybrids must not be flat towed, because the transmission is not being lubricated by a pump with the engine off. We follow the manufacturer procedure rather than treating it as a conventional car.
Does the hybrid system itself get looked at during a test?
A test reads what the vehicle reports about itself, and on a hybrid that takes in the systems managing how the engine starts and stops. A fault there can store a code and show as a failure while the car drives perfectly normally. Sandy's own lane means the diagnosis follows immediately.
Are hybrid parts harder to get hold of?
Far less than they once were. The common hybrids have been on the road long enough that parts supply is ordinary, and remanufactured inverters, modules and packs exist for the popular models. Sandy is AAA Approved and will tell you what is available, and the lead time, before committing you to anything.
