Exhaust System Service, answered

How does a faulty exhaust system affect my vehicle?
A damaged exhaust can cause poor engine performance, increased emissions and, most seriously, carbon monoxide leaking into the cabin. That last risk is why a new exhaust noise is worth checking promptly rather than living with, particularly on a vehicle used to carry passengers.
Can a clogged catalytic converter be repaired?
In a few cases a clogged converter can be cleaned, but severe blockages or physical damage usually require complete replacement. A converter rarely fails on its own, so our technicians look for the underlying cause, such as a misfire or oil consumption, before fitting a replacement.
Can an exhaust problem trigger my check engine light?
Yes. If there is a fault with the catalytic converter, the oxygen sensors or other exhaust components, the vehicle's computer detects it and turns on the check engine light. Exhaust faults are among the more common reasons for an emissions related code being stored.
What are the signs my exhaust needs attention?
Listen for a louder than usual note, rumbling or hissing, and watch for reduced fuel economy or a sulfur smell. Rattling from underneath often means a heat shield or a failed converter substrate. Any exhaust smell inside the cabin should be treated as urgent.
How much does exhaust repair cost?
It ranges widely. Replacing a corroded section or a heat shield is inexpensive, while a catalytic converter is one of the costlier parts on the vehicle. We identify exactly which component has failed before quoting, since converters often fail because of another fault.
