Drivetrain Service, answered

What are the signs that my vehicle's drivetrain needs attention?
Common signs include unusual noises such as clunking or whining, difficulty shifting gears, and vibrations felt through the floor or seat while driving. Because the drivetrain carries engine power to the wheels, small noises tend to develop into larger failures rather than settling down on their own.
How often should I have my drivetrain inspected?
Having the drivetrain inspected during regular maintenance appointments is usually enough for most drivers. Bring it in sooner if you notice new noises, vibration or shifting problems, and more often if the vehicle regularly tows, carries heavy loads or spends time off pavement.
Can I continue to drive if I suspect a drivetrain issue?
It is not advisable. Driving on a failing drivetrain can cause further damage and raises real safety concerns, particularly if a driveshaft or differential lets go at speed. Having it checked as soon as symptoms appear usually keeps the repair smaller than it would otherwise become.
What does the drivetrain actually include?
The drivetrain is everything that carries power from the engine to the wheels, including the transmission, driveshaft, differentials, axles and CV joints. Our ASE certified technicians inspect the whole assembly rather than one component, since a noise in one part is often caused by wear in another.
How much does drivetrain repair cost?
It varies widely, because the drivetrain covers everything from a CV joint to a differential. Diagnosis comes first so you are not quoted for the wrong component, since a noise in one part is often caused by wear in another. We price the repair once the cause is known.
