Electrical System Service at our Sandy shop
The electrical system is behind the engine starting, the lights working and most of what the dashboard tells you, and electrical faults rarely show up where the problem actually is. At McNeil's Auto Care in Sandy the circuit gets traced rather than the obvious part replaced and hoped over.
An inspection takes in the battery, alternator, starter, wiring harness, grounds and fuse box, checking for corrosion, damage and loose connections. A battery that keeps dying is usually a charging fault or a parasitic draw, so fitting a new battery without finding the cause buys you a few weeks rather than a fix.
Sandy runs its own safety and emissions testing lane, and lighting is part of what a safety inspection looks at. A failed bulb, a bad ground or a wiring fault behind a dead tail light can be found and fixed here and the vehicle rechecked in the same lane, with DMV renewal handled on site.
Repairs use quality parts and you are given a price before any of it is authorized. Sandy is an AAA Approved Auto Repair facility and the designated number one NAPA shop worldwide, with ASE certified technicians, open Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
Questions
Electrical System Service in Sandy, answered
- Why do my headlights look dimmer than they used to?
- Two quite different causes get mixed up here. Low voltage from a charging or ground problem dims them genuinely. Clouded, yellowed lenses scatter the light without the bulb being weak at all, and halogen bulbs do fade over years. We measure the voltage at the connector before selling anything.
- Can you program a replacement key or module?
- For many makes, yes. Keys, body modules and a number of replacement components have to be coded to the vehicle before they do anything, and a part fitted without that step simply sits there. We confirm what a given vehicle needs before ordering, since it decides whether this is one visit.
- Is there a charge for electrical diagnosis?
- Diagnosis is work in its own right and is quoted as such. Tracing a circuit takes a technician, a wiring diagram and a meter, and it is the step that stops you buying parts that were never faulty. You hear what we found, and what it costs, before anything else happens.
- Can trailer wiring cause problems elsewhere in the vehicle?
- It is one of the first things we look at. A poorly fitted tow harness can backfeed lighting circuits, blow fuses or flatten the battery, and the symptom turns up nowhere near the socket. Sandy's own testing lane catches lighting faults, which is often how an old tow wiring job surfaces.
