Alternator at our Sandy shop

The alternator converts engine power into the electricity your vehicle runs on and keeps the battery topped up while the engine turns. When it starts to fail, the battery quietly covers for it, which is why so many flat batteries turn out to be a charging problem rather than a worn out battery.

At McNeil's Auto Care in Sandy the charging system gets tested before anything is replaced. The same symptom can be the battery, the alternator, a corroded ground or a parasitic draw, and only testing separates them. Replacing the battery on a charging fault buys you a few weeks.

Sandy runs a Valvoline Express Care quick lube lane alongside the main bays, so a battery and charging check can ride along with a routine service rather than waiting for the car to fail to start. Anything the test flags moves into the main shop for proper diagnosis.

Lighting and charging also matter at inspection time, and Sandy runs its own safety and emissions testing lane with DMV renewal on site. You are given the cause and the price before any work is authorized. Open Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Alternator in Sandy, answered

What does a charging system test actually involve?
Less than most people expect, and it is quick. We measure output voltage and ripple with the engine running, load the system to see whether it holds up, and check for voltage drop across the main cables and the grounds. That test is the difference between a repair and a guess.
What does a whining or growling noise from that area mean?
Usually the bearings inside the alternator, which spin at several times engine speed and are a common failure point. A growl that rises and falls with engine revs is worth looking at before the unit seizes, because a locked pulley can shred the belt and take the power steering with it.
Will a dash warning light always come on first?
No, and that is the trap in it. The battery light reports a charging circuit fault rather than a weak one, so an alternator still producing some output but not enough can leave the dash dark while the battery slowly loses ground. Headlights dimming at idle is often the earlier clue.
Can a jump start damage the alternator?
A jump done correctly will not, but a deeply flattened battery asks a great deal of the charging system afterwards. Running an alternator for hours to refill a battery that is almost empty is hard on it, which is why we put the battery on a proper charger instead of driving it up.
